This is the first year that the switch to Daylight Savings Time is occurring early. For years, we adjusted our clocks on the first Sunday in April but now we'll be making the switch on the second Sunday in March (March 11). The change is expected to have an economic benefit, since it's hoped that the longer daylight hours will lessen energy consumption. Thanks to a 2005 act of Congress designed to save energy. The new law will come into play again in the fall, when it adds one more week of daylight-saving time, to Nov. 4. Suffice it to say, the same rationale applies then. Before we return to our regularly scheduled editorial, there is one additional issue to ponder: Why is it called daylight saving anyway, when you can't save daylight anymore than you can alter time?
