Ipod - convert or not???

I have a 1GB Ipod Shuffle. I can only fit 249 songs in it right now. But in settings I have the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". I was wondering if it will enable me to fit more songs in if I do this. Should I convert or not and what will it do?
Please answer only if you know!
