Women have served in the United States Military for over 200 years. Out of the nearly 3,500 Medal of Honor recipients Mary Edwards Walker (commonly referred to as Dr. Mary Walker), is the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor. Enjoy this month to the fullest! October has returned it is the only month that sits right in the sweet spot when Southerners can enjoy the autumn season —with its brilliant colors, cool temperatures and sunny, cloudless, azure skies, and we must enjoy it before it escapes for another year. A man with a mission. Not just a man, but a Marine with a mission who is determined to remind us that "They Came in Peace", lest we forget. Many "talk the talk" but he " Walks the Walk" to remember. 10-23 40 years 273-mile walk around Jacksonville, North Carolina. “Walk to Remember”. For the fourth time, the Colorado resident is spending the first three weeks of October walking one mile for every name inscribed on the Jacksonville memorial to U.S. service members stationed near that North Carolina community who fell in Beirut and Grenada four decades ago. He said his mission is for as many people as possible to remember the fallen. Designed as a memorial wall, honors the memory of U.S. Marines who were killed on October 23, 1983 by a suicide truck bomber attack in Beirut, Lebanon. The design shows two broken white granite walls, symbolizing the destruction of buildings by the bomb. The two broken walls are separated by the statue of a soldier, dressed in full combat attire with his rifle ready. The wall to the left of the soldier is inscribed with the names of the fallen soldiers and other service personnel who have died as the result of the bombing. The wall also includes the names of three Marine pilots from the Camp Lejeune community who were killed in Grenada. The wall to the right of the soldier is inscribed with the words "They Came in Peace." |
