A generally intelligent person who shows interest and aptitude in multiple, usually academic-related subjects. A person with a passion for a seemingly trivial and non-sports related pursuit, misunderstood by society at large but proud of personal achievements.

My closest friends understand my kind of a good time, and respect that about me. My favorite people on this planet are the ones that can adapt to any conversation and add their own style to it.

There is an increasing number of people, especially males, who self-identify with the term nerd as badges of honor in their field. They may also do so as a statement of non-conformity or as a desire to be seen as eccentric. Even if they meet the standards requiring intelligence, many of them do not fit the traditional definition that includes some degree of social ineptitude or alienation. Given the traditional gender differences, male nerds tend to be more often self-styled than pejoratively labeled. Also, because shyness, introversion, and other geek-related personality traits are tolerated more in females than males, they are more likely to experience peer alienation.
