Ok so...I've been thinking a lot about this elusive state of being that we call happiness. And, oddly enough, when I went to look this word up in ye ole dictionary there were no definitions present for it. Plenty of definitions for it's root word "happy", but apparantly even Mr. Webster was loath to attempt to define happiness itself. HEH...smart guy.
But me...I'm not so smart apparantly.
Because I'm going to take a shot at it.
Happiness is, I think, a state of well being and contentment. It occurs most often when we get something we want or have longed for. But even then it doesn't always last...and even the most lasting form of happiness has it's moments of discontent. When you really think about it, though, wouldn't it be boring to feel the same thing all the time?
When you get right down to it, life is really a series of different emotions. Anger, despair, amusement, fear...with a bit of happiness thrown in for good measure...if you're lucky.
Most of us spend our lives in pursuit of this elusive emotion, feeling somehow cheated when we can't hold onto it. Some, the lucky few, actually appreciate what we're given.
Me, I prefer to see it for what it is. Not every moment in our lives can be a happy one. Things are sometimes going to go wrong. Nothing is perfect. Things are going to get broken, stuff is going to be lost, and loved ones are going to piss you off. But if you wait it out for a while, the happiness will usually come back. And it's worth waiting for.
You gotta grab that happiness while you can...and try your damndest to hold onto it for as long as you can. Because before you know it, that chance could pass you by.
I know. It's happened to me. But never again.
