Human perfection means FREEDOM. And there is no freedom without detachment--detachment from all that is not God. Detachment is NOT a flight from the world, nor a disinclination to creatures, nor a safe non-committalism. It is, rather, a DARING, solicitous, WARM-hearted, UN-selfish LOVE OF EVERYTHING. Detachment does not mean that you love nothing but God; it means that you love ALL IN GOD--the manifold in the ONE. It does not mean that you learn to love creatures less and less,, it means that you learn to love them more and more--but self-LessLy, as part of your VAST, undivided love of God.
