Her head is down,
Face to the wind,
And she walks with determined steps.
Early this morning her whole world fell apart,
And now she needs some time to see what’s left.
Who is it who knows the emptiness,
Brought on when love departs without warning,
And takes with them all that you are;
For you trusted,
Because that’s what you thought love was about,
And you gave the best of all that you are,
And thought that you were getting it in return,
And even if it wasn’t everything that you had hoped for,
It was still the best it could be,
Or so you thought,
Until this morning,
When love walked unexpectedly out the door.
Now there is no equilibrium,
And that’s why her steps are determined.
Coat collar upturned against the wind,
Sunglasses so they won’t ask questions.
She has a gaping hole,
Where her heart used to be,
And maybe that’s why it’s so hard to breathe.
He’s gone,
And she knows he’s not coming back.
The promises -
Just that,
Words strung together without meaning.
How could she have missed the lies,
Disguised as flowers at rainbow’s end?
And where would she go from here?
God knows this life can hurt you,
Especially when your sail is full of wind;
Just when you finally walk with purpose,
Head held high with pride,
Love was the gift she had been given;
All else was sculpted around it,
And then,
Just when it all seemed so perfect,
The lesson came screaming through,
You know,
Love is never a sure thing.
