WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?
Most people respect and honor police officers for so often putting their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. Unfortunately, the fact that a member of the West Vancouver Police force was recently selected for promotion by her Police Detachment Chief after she had been caught, charged, convicted, and sentenced for driving with a Blood Alcohol Concentration ( BAC) almost three times the legal limit, looks outrageously inappropriate to all reasonable, law-respecting citizens. Any entitlement to respect this detachment might have expected is severely damaged by the news that it is not unusual for officers to drink with their supervisors in police headquarters before or after their shifts. What a shocking disregard for public safety and for their role in society!
Surely, it was just dumb luck that Constable Lisa Alford didn’t kill or injure herself or others. The internal investigators’ conclusion that she is unlikely to repeat such criminal behavior belies the reality that driving with such a high BAC indicates a high tolerance to alcohol and an equally high possibility of being a seasoned impaired driver. Hundreds of BC citizens have been killed and thousands have been injured by just such drivers. Whether on duty or off duty, driving while under the influence of alcohol is not just a minor mistake, it is a criminal offence and must be treated as such.
Yours truly
