Angus King among 50 US senators urging NFL to back Washington Redskins name change

Sen. Angus King, urged the National Football League on Thursday to endorse a name change for the Washington Redskins, saying the franchise's name was a racial slur.

In a Malcolm Smith Jersey letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the lawmakers said the league should follow the example of the National Basketball Association, which has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life for bigoted remarks.

"Today, we urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did, that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," wrote the senators, all of them Democrats or independents such as King, who caucuses with the majority Democrats. football team."

The letter adds pressure on Dan Snyder, the Redskins' main owner. He has defied calls from activists and journalists for 14 years to change his team's name and Indian logo.

Native American groups have fought for the name change in court and through advertising campaigns. Even President Barack Obama has weighed in, saying that if he owned the team, he would consider changing the name.

The letter was led by Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, and signed by 47 other senators. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, sent a separate letter to Goodell.

Goodell had said in January most football fans and Americans supported the Redskins' keeping their name.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement that the league had not Percy Harvin Navy Jersey received the letter, but that the NFL has long shown a commitment to progressive leadership on diversity issues.

"The intent of the team's name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image. The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently," he said.

A Redskins spokesman said the team had no response to the letter.

5 surprising facts about Richard Sherman Jersey O

Simpson was charged with the murders of his ex wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman, gruesome killings turned into a manhunt.

Simpson a Heisman Trophy winner, NFL Hall of Famer and actor was missing. on June 17, 1994, police saw Simpson on the expressway in a white Ford Bronco driven by his best friend and former teammate, Al Cowlings. Simpson was riding in the back, and Richard Sherman Authentic Jersey he reportedly had a gun.

With the cavalcade of police cars in pursuit, TV helicopters swooped in to join the chase. The 60 mile, low speed pursuit through southern Los Angeles would go down in television history.

Nearly 20 years later, here are five things that might surprise www.footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Zach-Miller-Jersey.html you about the chase.

1. The Bronco chase and subsequent "not guilty" verdict are among the most memorable TV moments in the past 50 years.

The Simpson verdict was http://www.footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Marshawn-Lynch-Jersey.html the third most "universally impactful" televised moment of the last 50 years behind the September 11, 2001, attacks and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to a survey by Nielsen and Sony. Simpson

Simpson's white Bronco chase came in sixth, behind the Russell Wilson Navy Jersey Challenger space shuttle disaster and the death of Osama bin Laden.

The survey scored each big televised event based on how many people viewed the event live, how many could recall details about where they were during the event and how many people who could remember talking about it with other people.

2. The Bronco chase dominated sports coverage on a day with major sports news. Open, the World Cup opened in Chicago, the Rangers celebrated winning the Stanley Cup, the Knicks played game five of the NBA finals against the Houston Rockets, and Ken Griffey Jr. tied Babe Ruth for the most home runs hit before June 30.

ESPN covered the other big sporting news, but jumped back and forth for frequent updates on the chase. NBC continued coverage of the NBA finals, but the game appeared in a small box in the corner while Tom Brokaw anchored coverage of the Bronco chase.

3. Domino's Pizza reported record sales of pizza delivery during the chase.

Presumably because people were glued to the TV set, not wanting Russell Wilson Kids Jersey to miss anything, they ordered pizza.

"It was a record night at the time. on the East. People were fascinated and didn't want to miss it. It was as big as a Super Bowl Sunday up to that point," said Tim McIntyre, vice president of corporate communications for Domino's Pizza.

4. Robert Kardashian, father of Kourtney, Kim, Khlo and Rob, was O. J. Simpson's friend. He read a note by Simpson on the day of the chase and served with his defense team during Simpson's murder trial.

When Simpson failed to turn himself in on the day of the case, Robert Kardashian read a letter by Simpson to the media. This letter was interpreted by many as a suicide note:

"To whom it may concern, first, everyone understand I had nothing to do with Nicole's murder. . Don't feel sorry for me. I've had a great life, great friends. and not this lost person. Thanks for making my life special. I hope I helped yours," he read.

When Cowlings pulled into Simpson's driveway, police were waiting. The sun set, and Simpson was still holed up in the car. Police didn't approach the Bronco. Simpson had a gun, and they wanted to avoid a potentially violent end. Finally, two hours after police first spotted him, Simpson emerged from the Bronco. Clutching family photos, he staggered out of his car and collapsed into officers' arms.

In Cowlings' pockets, police found almost $9,000 in cash. In the Bronco, police found a fake goatee and mustache with a bottle of makeup adhesive and receipts from a beauty store, along with Simpson's passport and the gun.

After Sam, Zach Miller Authentic Jersey who attended Missouri, was selected by the Rams in the seventh and final round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, television cameras showed Sam briefly kiss and hug his boyfriend.

Jones, who was a seventh round pick of the Dolphins from Arkansas State a year ago, tweeted after the kiss and embrace.

Then, in response to a tweet sent to him, Jones replied, Both tweets were soon deleted, but not before Dolphins management was made aware of the situation. Jones apologized to Sam, Dolphins owner Steve Ross and the entire Dolphins family.

want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media, Jones said in a team issued statement Sunday night. take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment.

remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross, my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward. Coach Joe Philbin echoed the disappointment general manager Dennis Hickey expressed on Saturday night.

were disappointed to read Don tweets during the NFL Draft, Philbin said in the statement. were inappropriate and Zach Miller Jersey unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don (Sunday) about respect, discrimination and judgment.

comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program. We will continue to emphasize and educate our players that these statements will not be tolerated. Jones miscue was the team second Twitter incident in a three day span. On Thursday, after Tennessee tackle Ja James was selected by the Dolphins in the first round with the No. 19 pick, Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey sent a tweet that said, pick! Can wait for our gifts he getting us lol That tweet was regarded as a poor attempt to joke about rookie hazing, a topic that isn taken lightly by the Dolphins after the Wells Report that detailed Pouncey and others bullying/harassing former Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin last season.

Since the bullying/harassment incident the Dolphins have formed two in house committees, Ross sponsored a bill in the Florida Legislature on bullying, and the team and NFL has made respect a main theme for the season.

It not known when Jones will undergo his training. The Dolphins, such as other NFL teams, are currently Marshawn Lynch Womens Jersey having team meetings as well as weight lifting and conditioning training.

The first OTA (Organized Team Activities) are May 27 28 and May 30. That followed by OTAs on June 2 3 and 5th, and June 9 12. The three day mini camp, which is also closed to the public, is June 17 19.

Training camp dates haven been announced but it will likely start in late July.

Pouncey, because of his role in the bullying scandal, has to be cleared by a medical professional before Marshawn Lynch Youth Jersey he can play in the regular season. Hickey said a few days ago the team isn sure when Pouncey will have his evaluation.

Jones was a special teams mainstay last season and developed a reputation for his willingness to make hard hits. He'll primarily compete with veterans Reshad Jones, Louis Delmas and footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Russell-Wilson-Jersey.html Jimmy Wilson for playing time from scrimmage.

Story HighlightsA high school teammate of Aaron Hernandez says the NFL player represents his hometown of BristolThere have been signs of trouble in Hernandez personal life in high school and collegeFamily members say the death of his father changed Hernandez behavior dramatically

Aaron Hernandez's high school teammates from Bristol Central in Connecticut long ago grew used to the fame and attention Hernandez drew to their town and school, first as one of the best high school football players in the country and most recently as a star tight end for the New England Patriots.

The attention this week, with Hernandez in the middle of a homicide investigation in North Attleboro, Mass., has been altogether different.

"So all this that's going on for him today, it's overwhelming," said Dustin Tucker, a former classmate and teammate who graduated with Hernandez in 2007. "I guess you could say it's overwhelming for our whole city. He represents us, too, and the whole city and everything that we stand for."

EARLIER: Police spend 4 hours at Hernandez homeSaturday, police went into Hernandez's home for at least the third time this week. It was not known if Hernandez was there. Steven Hauschka Authentic Jersey ET. They did remove several bags.

Monday, a jogger found the body of Hernandez acquaintance Odin Lloyd, 27, a semi pro football player, in a nearby industrial park. Police said Lloyd was shot in the head. Cliff Avril Womens Jersey

Hernandez, 23, has not been publicly named a suspect, but ABC News, citing anonymous police sources, has reported that police could try to arrest Hernandez on charges of obstruction of justice. ABC News has reported that Hernandez destroyed his cellphone and Steven Hauschka Youth Jersey video surveillance system and had his home professionally cleaned Monday, the day Lloyd's body was found.

AREA VERDICT: Locals assume he's guilty

A clerk in the Attleboro District Court told USA TODAY Sports no arrest warrant had been issued when the offices Cliff Avril Kids Jersey close Friday.

Much of the news media focus this week has been on North Attleboro, not far from the Patriots' Foxborough, Mass., home. But Tucker said news media also descended on Bristol, a city of about 60,000 people 20 miles from Hartford. Bristol is home to ESPN, but Tucker said it had a small town vibe, adding, "Everyone knows everyone."

And now, few people know what to think.

Tucker said he had been asked frequently this week by friends about Hernandez and the investigation into Lloyd's death.

Last week another man footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Kj-Wright-Jersey.html from Connecticut filed a civil lawsuit in Florida saying Hernandez shot him in the face in February, causing him to lose an eye; he is seeking damages in excess of $100,000.

"I hope it's not true, but I can't make assumptions on if it's true or not. I really don't know, and I don't want to guess," Tucker said.

Tucker said he had made the two hour drive from Bristol to Foxborough several times to watch Hernandez play with the Patriots and caught up with Hernandez each time he was there. Tucker said he didn't want to bother Hernandez while he was in the midst of the investigation and would wait until there was resolution to contact him. But he said it was difficult to reconcile the friend and teammate he remembered with the reports he saw on television.

"I just don't want the papers to make him seem like a crazy person, you know? I feel bad for the people it happened to, the guy who died and the guy who got shot. My condolences go out to them. But I just don't like the fact that he's mixed up in all of this," Tucker said.

But there have been signs of trouble in Hernandez's personal life dating back to high school, issues that followed him to the University of Florida and now to his life as an NFL star.

Hernandez responded by lashing out at his family, footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Jon-Ryan-Jersey.html smoking marijuana and spending his free time hanging around with a rough crowd of young men in Bristol.

Probate recordsfiled in court in Oshawa in early May, a month after Flaherty died of a heart attack, list the total value of his assets at$989,045.

These do not include real estate he co owned with his wife, Ontario Progressive Conservative MPP Christine Elliott, or any life insurance or shared pension benefits payable to her.

When Flahertyresigned as finance minister, a post that paid $242,000 annually, many speculated that his ongoing health issues with a chronic skin conditionwere the motivation for leaving a job he held since 2006.

That Flaherty assets totalled less than$1 million suggests this departure from politics was partlymotivated by a desire to increase his earnings in the last years of his career, after spending 19 years inpublic K.J. Wright Womens Jersey service, and leaving a larger inheritance to his three sons.

His former chief of staff,Kevin McCarthy, told the Canadian Press in April that Flaherty had talked for years about making money in the private sector. truly believe that why he stepped down, it wasn health reasons. probate formsdo not detail specific assets, but part of the $669,000in non real estate assets likely represents proceeds from the sale of shares of his formerlaw firm, Flaherty, www.footballseahawksprostore.com/Nike-Cliff-Avril-Jersey.html Dow, Elliot McCarthy.

He and his wife sold theirstakes in the Whitby based firm last September.

Elliott, who was also hisformer his law partner and K.J. Wright Youth Jersey acted as executor of his estate, likely chose to have hiswill probated given court approval to make it easier tomanage these funds. She is the sole beneficiary listed in his will, though it includes provisions to share his estate with his children ifshe had died before he did.

The probate records also say Flaherty alone owned$320,045 in real estate, possibly the condominium in Ottawa ByWard Market where he died.

In the conflict of interest declarations he was required to file as a cabinet minster and MP, Flaherty listed a one third ownership in a numbered Ontario corporation that owned the former Whitby public library buildinghis law firm occupied. He also reported Jon Ryan Authentic Jersey holding RRSPs through a blind trust.

As an Ontario MPP, Elliott was required to provide a more detailed disclosure of her financial interests. Her last report, filed in 2013, listed ownership of shares in theBank of Nova Scotia, Leons Furniture Ltd., Ann Taylor Stores Corp., BCE Inc., and Pengrowth Energy Corporation.

6 People You've Cheap Jerseys Never Heard of Who Probably Saved Your Life

It's interesting how a man can become a local hero by saving just one life or how a fictional character can be considered a superhero by saving a few thousand when there are people relatively unknown to history who have saved many, many times more.

These are men and women who saved millions of lives, without whom you might not exist, and whose names likely never came up in your history class.

Nuclear war. Doomsday. WWIII. forget about everything Stanley Kubrick, James Cameron or (God forbid) Alan Moore ever mused on the subject. Fact is stranger than fiction, and the truth is we came closer to nuclear annihilation than even the most taut Cold War thriller would let on. More than once. and USSR came closer to nuclear war than ever before. But you probably don't know that if it weren't for one man, we would all be wandering around a charred, radioactive wasteland today. And that guy wasn't JFK.

It's 1962, communist Cuba had gone nuclear, John F. Kennedy had the entire island under quarantine, Nikita Khrushchev was not intimidated by the young president and Kevin Costner's reputation as a legitimate actor was on the line.

For real, they cloned Bobby Kennedy for this movie.

In the center of this hot zone was the nuclear armed Soviet Foxtrot class submarine B 59, which on October 27, 1962 decided whether you personally would be alive right now. destroyers and the aircraft carrier USS Randolph, the submarine was eventually subjected to a barrage of depth charges. surface ships.

That is, if not for a guy named Vasili Arkhipov.

According to Director of the National Security Archive Thomas Blanton and former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, a guy called Vasili Arkhipov "saved the world". The thing is, to launch a nuke, the top three Soviets on the B 59 needed a unanimous vote. Captain Savitsky and Political Officer Ivan Semonovich Maslennikov were all for it, but Arkhipov, a mere second in command, was not all that wild about wiping out human civilization. Navy was a bad idea, and that they should resurface instead (even if it meant, you know, death). Captain Savitsky was not happy with this, but since he did not have the votes to go nuclear, the submarine surfaced, and the crisis was averted. So yeah, find out where Vasili Arkhipov is buried right now, and send him a fruit basket large enough to be seen from freaking space. He may have been a communist, but you owe him your damned life. and Soviets realized we were all walking a tightrope above a pool of lava, and that we should make peace with one other before tripping into Armageddon. had launched on them.) Yet another Soviet officer, Stanislav Petrov, would risk everything by standing down.

James Harrison has magical blood.

Specifically, his blood contains an extremely rare enzyme that can be used to treat babies dying of Rhesus cheap nfl jerseys disease. If you've never heard of that disease and figure it's not a big deal, well, wait for the numbers.

Harrison, being a generous type, has donated his rare, life saving blood roughly 1,000 times over 56 years. This has saved the lives of seriously, you're not going to believe this over two million babies around the world.

His dedication to blood donation has earned him the nickname "the man with the golden arm," which makes us feel like douchebags for giving that nickname to NFL quarterbacks instead. Any way you cut it, saving two million babies is always going to trump saving a game with a choice interception.

"Yeah, two million. I'm hoping to hit three, but whatever. I'm in it for the babies."

The whole thing is kind of a "pay it forward" situation for Harrison, who needed major chest surgery when he was 13 years old, and soaked up 13 liters of blood over the course of three months. "The blood I received saved my life so I made a pledge to give blood when I was 18." This cheap jerseys has turned out to be the second most important vow in history.

Not only is he continuing to save lives every day now that he's entering his twilight years, but his blood has also been used to develop a vaccine called Anti D to keep those babies safe. Forever.
