On Dark Nights of Midnight Blue

On dark nights of midnight blue
she steps out to walk on the clouds
and touch the moon.
Iridescent stars in her hair
light her way as she slips among
the shadows cast by the castle walls.
Quietly she inventories her secrets
spreading them out before her ~
crouching over them.
The eyes of another watch intently.
He sees her count what he has
so recently counted himself.
Silently, he wonders if she will notice
that, yet again, she has one
less private memory
to stash away in the holes of the
walls she tends so carefully
and lovingly.
she feels the precious treasures
of her mind before her;
her fingers slide over them
as she closes her eyes.
she remembers each smile and tear,
each touch of love and each touch of pain,
each word of hope and each word of denial.
her face lifts towards his hidden eyes
as she scoops the thoughts
into her palm and casts them
into the darkness beyond her.
They sparkle like magical jewels and
burn in the night air before
their eyes.
