THings that served no purpose but managed to become absolute cultural icons!
1. The Pet Rock: A few decades ago some guy decided that being around the company of a rock was much more pleasing than being around the company of people. Thus came about the birth of the pet rock. This way everyone could at least have one friend...even the people who couldnt get one by paying them. As for my pet rock..well one day it jumped out of my hands and leaped through my neighbors window never to be seen again!
2. Furby: Designed like some creature from a Harry Potter book the Furby boomed into popularity in the late 90's causing all sorts of panic and chaos at toy stores around the country. If you have ever witnessed one of these materialistic frenzies you'd think the Civil War was starting all over again. Personally I hated the little buggers. The first time I heard one talk was in a dark room...you scary little bastards!!!
3. Sea Monkeys: Sea Monkeys were in actuallity little brine shrimp. The way it was advertised though made the consumer think that all you had to do was put these really small things in water and pretty soon you have a whole colony of water breathing monkeys that laugh and play and swim around. Of course they did none of the above but that didnt stop flocks of people from going out and buying them. I knew a kid once who had sea monkeys...sad thing was they were more interesting than he was.
4. Disposable Digital Cameras: My final entry into my invention wall of shame is the almighty disposable digital camera. If ever there was proof that we live in an Instant Gratification society this is it. 1 hour photo was bad enough as George Carlin once said "You just saw the fucking thing" than they came out with disposable cameras which weren't that bad. You could take them to places you wouldnt dare take your expensive camera...such as family gatherings. Now we have the Disposable Digital Camera...C'mon people have you really gotten that impatient? I highly doubt it will cause you bodily harm if you wait a few days for pictures to come in from Aunt Ethel's always boring Christmas party at the old folks home.
Well to what purpose this blog serves I have no clue nor do I care. But i will tell you this I have heard that there is a robotic mop that when set down will not only mop and clean your floor but it will dry it...technology is going to destroy us all :o)
