I could not wait for this movie to come out, and then of course it only played in our area for a week, and I was on call, so I missed it.
So I eagerly awaited the release onto DVD, and watched it this weekend. And I felt it was very underwhelming.
Johnny Depp, who I loveas an actor, came across as flat. His partner, Helena Bonham Carter, was better, but neither was all that impressive.
Sasha Baron Cohen, on the other hand, was very good. As was Edward Sanders, who played Toby. His singing was the best of the lot.
The clothing was superb. The sets were dead on incredible. And the Tim Burton factor ran thru it all.
I love Tim Burton. I like his odd angles. I like the look that he creates. Visually, I enjoy everything that he does.
And he was taking an existing stage play, and putting his twist on it. But to me, the problem lay within the play.
The music was boring. It sounded forced, and some of the songs just weren't that musical. And Depp and Carter were definitely the weak links when it came to singing.
But the story was good, the sets divine, and I'm not totally despondant that I rented it. I am glad I didn't spend $40 in the movies though.
So all in all, I give it 6 straight razors.
