Just like a timeless debate on which came first: the egg or the chicken, the conflict on whether leaders are either born or made has also been a cause of debate even among a lot of experts and professionals.
Some people think there are naturally born leaders, those who inherited a leading gene far more imposing than the rest. These are the ones who have a natural charisma which can motivate other people to work together. Others believe that it only takes monitoring, practice and proper training to hone a person’s potential and skills for leadership.
But what is it really – born or made?
The Peterson Group, your number one partner in leadership coaching and consulting, has conducted a research on a hundred of random employees from different small and medium businesses in Jakarta, Indonesia who took their stand on the never ending debate of the true nature of leadership. Reviewing the results, it shows 54% of the respondents believe that to be able to become a successful leader, you have to undergo extraneous training and have ample number of experiences becoming one. Just because one or both of your parents have been leaders, managers or chief executives or have experiences leading people, it automatically drives you into the same position. Although your parents’ status may be able to be an advantage, it does not mean you have the skills to make others follow you.
In a different study to students in grades 6 and 7, results show that 76% of students show leadership skills in an early stage. Most of these pupils already have records of being dominant among their peers even when they were still younger. Now that they have reached a certain level in school, they are able to outshine others in academics and group decisions. Common candidates for being the leader are the same set of students who had shown potential on their younger years.
As these two statistics are being compared, complaints arose from both sides. Each claim has been proven by further studies.
Researchers confirmed that some people are born with innate qualities that predispose them to being leaders. However, even those of us who aren’t naturally gifted with leadership acumen can acquire it.
Experts, however, emphasize that there is no point in debating on this issue. Whether leaders are made or born, it does not matter. As long as one can righteously and properly lead while others agrees to follow, it is enough to create equilibrium in between.
