This is good news: Have you read the latest letter signed by 56 House Members including Chairman Conyers, ZOE LOFGREN, Dennis Kucinich, PETE STARK, MIKE HONDA, and Robert Wexler requesting that Attorney General Mukasey "appoint special counsel to investigate whether the Bush Administration's policies regarding the interrogation of detainees have violated federal criminal laws"??? If not, you'll be pleased to know the letter states "[t]here is mounting evidence that the Bush Administration has sanctioned enhanced interrogation techniques against detainees under the control of the United States that warrant an investigation." This, in my mind, *is* a BIG deal. We should call our Reps, those who signed it AND those who did not, and urge the ones who did sign it to pursue their goal as strongly as possible and those who did not to both back it and then pursue it with all their might. Next step... Impeachment! :-)

2. Why
Special Counsel is a Justice Department function, meaning the administration, not Congress, will be gathering evidence. This development is on the same level as the firing of U.S. Attorneys issue. What if Mukasey refuses their request? Another constitutional crisis? But a more serious one in my judgment, especially when added to the mounting accusations of the Administration's lawlessness.
3. Take This Action
Call, email, and schedule appointments to visit the Representatives who signed the Mukasey letter when they return from DC for the Congressional Recess June 28 - July 6. The list of signers are pages 2-4 of the letter attached. I will organize delegations to visit Barbara Lee and Pete Stark.
Ask, beseech, demand that they start impeachment for Cheney, whether or not Mukasey appoints Special Counsel.
