To Net or Not to Net!

A lot of people have mixed ideas about finding romance on the internet. Everyone hears about the serial killers searching for their victims on the internet and fears that that they could be yet another statistic. Okay, they do exist...but what is so different from them searching the newspapers or other mediums for their victims? Are we going to live our lives in fears in that everyone we might talk to on the net are bad people? I hope not. Not all strangers are bad people; if that were true, we would never meet that person sitting next to us on the bus or at the coffee shop. After all, how do people go from strangers to friends without some form of introduction or stumbling over the awkwardness of meeting others. Of course, the movies like, "You Have Mail!", seem to, on the other hand, glorify the romance through the internet. Not all people on the internet are out there to meet someone new for romance; some are only out there to merely make new friends. When missing that intimate relationship in your life, who needs just another friend?? lol.... I was talking to a co-worker to day and she was telling me that she has been single for 10 years now and has had difficulty in meeting men locally because she doesn't do the bar scene (and who really wants to meet someone attached to the bar scene and under the facade of the non-reality attached to the drunkards generally found in the bars). Most men at Churches are married and have families; single men are too consumed oftentimes in finding themselves and living the macho imagery that they can and do live without women and enjoy their Sunday day gaming rituals. Men at other advocacy/business functions are generally all advocacy/business and are not thinking outside of the box that the beautiful woman sitting near them may actually be single as well. Of course, too, there are the men that don't want to be bothered by families in motion. They want to enjoy their single-hood for as long as possible and don't want to be consumed by too many responsibilities all at once, albeit there are always exceptions to the rule. I told her that in 1999 in San Antonio, I had met my last husband on Yahoo Personals and I would never give up the possibilities of finding romance on the internet because he was such a sweetheart and doted on me often. When I moved to Houston as a promoted manager in a corporation, he followed me there and we eventually got married in 2001. Unfortunately, he died in 2002 and we will never know if life could have been truly happily ever after; however, life was good while we were together and married. Whether or not anyone else will find such a romantic, doting man as I had found is anyone's guess. Of course, I would hope so; or, perhaps I had found the only doting, caring, romantic man on the internet???? Nah, I don't think so. It may be a rariety to find that much of a romantic man on the internet --- or, even in the "traditional ways" of meeting a man. The "romantic" man does seem a hard to find quality these days, oftentimes. What I tell my friends when they express qualms about meeting men on the internet, is (1) as you would do even meeting someone in the traditional ways, you need to be cautious and try to get to know them, (2) sometimes you have to pry a little more into their lives than you would do if you could look them direct in the eye, (3) there is no harm done in talking to folks on the net, after all nothing is lost and the worse you can do is have a life time friend, and (4) the risk taken to meet that very special sort of guy, just might be worth all the while. Any thoughts on the matter? Have you met your special someone through the internet?
