So, I watched Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not last night. Which was great fun, and interesting. A contrast to modern movies, where everything moves so much more rapidly. And it made me think about whether someone like Humphrey Bogart would ever be a big star today. Because he's not handsome, or charming, or anything. He's a star because he's Humphrey Bogart, but in our modern appearance-obsessed Hollywood, would Humphrey have been a star?
Lauren Bacall, by the way? *fans herself* Can you whistle?
Just to warn everyone in advance, I will probably be offline for most of nine days starting this Friday. I have a guest from out-of-town coming Fri-Sun. (My friend Mike, who goes to Penn State. I met him on the 'net about eight months ago.)
Then Monday I fly to San Jose on business for a couple days. I'm at work at HQ on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then I go on vacation Thursday through Monday. I'll be visiting friends and family in the Bay area ... people that I was close with when I lived there, and now get to see far too little of. Luckily, every few years I get a work-sponsored trip to the Bay area and get to see everyone.
(In case anyone cares, here's my itinerary: Thursday night and Friday day in Berkeley with my college friend DanP and his wife Nadya. Friday night with my friend Barry in San Francisco. Saturday brunch with my old "Buffy" gang [my closest friends when I lived there] and then the rest of the day with my best friend from high school, Anne, and her family. On either Thursday or Saturday night, I'll hopefully get to see my friend Gian-Paolo, who I met on the 'net in 1992 when he was a mere 12 years old. Then Sunday I will spend the day with my family -- I'll be driving up to Sacramento with my aunt and uncle for my cousin's birthday party. Monday I fly home.)
During all this time, I will be able to check in and read email, etc., but probably won't be able to take a lot of time to respond to comments, or be at all able to rate new pics and stash items or read new blogs. And I don't expect to be on AIM, Yahoo, or MSN Messenger at all.
But feel free to leave me LOTS of love here while I'm gone to show me how much you miss me, OK?
